How to use RetroArch
Apparently, loads of people are having headaches trying to understand how this whole RetroArch thing works, so I'll write this in hopes that you get your mind cleared and can start using this.
How RetroArch works
- RetroArch is basically a multiplatform program that can be used for emulating a massive amount of different platforms, with the help of cores that developers make in order to be able to load different ROM's for different systems. Think about RetroArch as a skeleton, and the Cores as the brain for emulating a system.
- RetroArch and its Cores need to be modified for every device they will run on, so not every Core is available on every system. Hence why the Vita only has like 18 Cores (and not all of them work properly yet).
Loading games with RetroArch
- I've seen people here saying that the program is asking for a 'Core' before being able to play a game. This, in the case of the current builds for PSVita, is false. The different .vpk's that you install are RetroArch loaded with the Core you installed. So for example, if you install the Genesis Plus GX .vpk, when you open the bubble for the emulator, it opens RetroArch with the Genesis Core already loaded.
- To load a ROM, you have to select the 'Load Content' option from the main menu. This will usually make you enter another menu with the single option of 'Select File'. You select it, open ux0:/, and then you just have to look for your games. After that, it will either open the ROM, return to the main menu, or crash. If one of the 2 later options occur, that means that either the Core is not working yet, something is wrong with your ROM, or somehow the setup of the .vpk went wrong.
- Error fix kit license key. Apparently, the Cores for Arcade emulators need certain extra files to work, and have some limitations on the ROM's they can run too. I'm not really good with explaining how this stuff work, but the solutions are generic to the cores they're using, so Google can help you out.
If I failed explaining anything, you need help with a particular problem, or if I hopped over some information while writing this, please feel free to comment about it.
EDIT: Somebody asked about the cores and the respective platform they emulate. You can enter https://wiki.libretro.com/index.php?title=Category:Libretro_Cores to look up the core names, and the console they emulate.
EDIT: Remember that when using CPS1/2, or Neo Geo, you should download a Parent ROM. The Internet is full of Clones!
I hope it helps!
